News that the Najib administration had agreed to allow Australian miner Lynas to set up the refinery had sparked a public outcry. Within days of the news, the tsunami and consequent nuclear meltdown at two reactors hit Japan. That spurred Kuantan residents fearing radioactive fallout from the rare earth mining operations into greater urgency.

Contamination from radioactive waste had caused many cancer-linked deaths to the Bukit Merah residents and although more than two decades have passed, Mitsubishi has still to finish clearing the radioactive materials from the old ARE site.

Najib refuses to accept petition from Kuantan residents to stop Lynas.

MCA deputy president Datuk Seri Liow Tiong Lai said the public must be consulted first before a license was given to Lynas to operate the plant.

Vincent Jiam, leader of a group of Pahang residents protesting the Lynas Advanced Materials Plant, said that plant would bring more harm than good.
If Vincent and the group can come all the way to see their PM, then I think Najib should be man enough to face them in person.

Step 1: Get potassium iodide

Have potassium iodide on hand; you may need it to protect your thyroid from the radioactive iodine fallout of a nuclear event. It is available without a prescription; ask your pharmacist for an FDA-approved brand and dosage guidelines.

Tip: In the event of an attack, emergency officials may advise people over 40 not to take potassium iodide, since they have the lowest chance of developing thyroid cancer or thyroid injury after exposure to radioactive iodine.

Step 2: Go below

If an attack is imminent, get indoors and go as far below ground as you can. If that's not possible, seek whatever shelter you can.

Step 3: Seal yourself in

Once indoors, close all windows and doors and turn off air conditioners, heaters, and other ventilation systems.

Step 4: Seal up your car

If you can't get to a building, stay inside your car. Close the windows and vents, turn off the heat and A/C, and hold a cloth over your mouth and nose to avoid breathing in radioactive dust and smoke.

Step 5: Protect yourself outdoors

If you're caught outdoors or very near the blast when it happens, don't look at it or you risk temporary or even permanent blindness. Keep your mouth open so your eardrums don't burst. Don't touch objects thrown by an explosion; they might be radioactive.

Step 6: Stay put

If you are more than 10 miles from the epicenter of the blast, remain in the shelter for 48 to 72 hours after the blast.

Step 7: Get out of Dodge!

If you are closer than 10 miles to the epicenter after the explosion, get moving! You have 10 to 20 minutes to get at least a mile away from the mushroom cloud, or you risk lethal radiation poisoning.

Tip: Be sure to move downwind or perpendicular to the wind.

Step 8: Cover up

Keep your mouth, nose, and as much of your skin covered as you move away from the blast area.Once you're at a safe distance, take off your clothes; this alone may get rid of up to 80 percent of radioactive dust. Then take a shower, which will further reduce your exposure.

Step 9: Get decontaminated

Rid your body of radioactive material as soon as possible by reporting to the nearest decontamination center set up in your area.

Northern Thailand hit by another quake on Friday (25/3/2011)

A 5.5-magnitude earthquake struck northern Thailand on Friday (25/3/2011), one day after a tremor hit neighbouring Myanmar and killed at least 50 people.
There are no reports of any injuries or damage as yet.

On Thursday, a 6.8-magnitude tremor struck Myanmar, about 110 kilometres from the border with Thailand.It destroyed over 100 buildings and injured at least 40 people.
Thursday's tremor also caused some limited damage in Thailand's northern province of Chiang Rai.

Two strong quakes of magnitude 7.0 struck northeast Myanmar, close to the Thai and Laotian borders, the U.S. Geological Survey reported on Thursday, 24/3/2011.
It said the quakes struck seconds apart at 8:25 p.m. on Thursday (1355 GMT) and were centered 69 miles north of Chiang Rai in neighboring Thailand.

The quake comes two weeks after Japan was hit by an earthquake and tsunami that left around 27,000 people dead or missing and triggered a crisis at its Fukushima nuclear plant.

Myanmar and Japan sit on different tectonic plates, separated by the vast Eurasian plate.

No tsunami warning was issued after the Myanmar quake as US seismologists said it was too far inland to generate a devastating wave in the Indian Ocean.

The US Geological Survey (USGS) initially recorded the quake as magnitude 7.0, but later revised it down to 6.8.

The Consumers’ Association of Penang (CAP) and Sahabat Alam Malaysia (SAM) are very concerned with the Pahang state government’s decision to go ahead with the proposed rare earth plant in Gebeng despite the fact that this refinery is a disaster waiting to happen.

here is no safe level or threshold of ionizing radiation exposure. Long-term, low-level (chronic) exposure to radiation is harmful because living tissue in the human body can be damaged by ionizing radiation.

The exposure to radioactive waste can contribute to increased incidence of childhood leukaemia, cancer, miscarriages, impaired immune systems with an abnormal low white blood cell counts, high lead levels among children which would lead to lead poisoning.

Children are much more vulnerable to the harmful effects of radiation disasters than the general population because their bodies absorb and metabolize substances differently, and because they are more likely to develop certain cancers from such an exposure.

There is also a high possibility that children born to parents that have been exposed to radiation could be affected by those exposures too. The other issue of concern is that there no known way to safely dispose the waste which is generated from this refinery.

Lynas was asked to comment on what will happen to the waste once they decide to close the plant – is it going to be shipped back to Australia? No answer given. They didn’t want to talk about the waste at all. Lynas says the waste product is radioactive. This perhaps explain why there should be great concern by the people living and working within the vicinity of the plant.There is every reason to suspect that the residents of Kuantan ( Kuantan Town,Beserah,Balok,Gebeng up to kemaman ) are not aware of the potential dangers they are exposed to. How many of these residents are even aware of the location of such a plant in Gebeng?
Have we not learnt from the ARE tragedies in Papan and Bukit Merah that the politicians who had much to gain had placed public safety and accountability last?

The offcial answer given by Lynas when asked why not in Australia but in Malaysia, is total bull…. Lynas said “Lynas subsequently identified Malaysia as the best global location for this plant. It is a credit to Malaysia that there are great port facilities, industrial land, good chemical supplies, reliable utilities, a clear legal framework, strict and clear regulations, good education standards at secondary, technical and university levels and a government with a vision for value added industry.” Lynas must be thinking that we Malaysian are ignorants and fools. All these consideration are also available in Australia and in fact much better especially in education, legal framework, etc.
May be, MIDA and other government agency members present can easily be fooled by Lynas, but not us. This is a very serious matter .

Bukit Merah was, and still is, a disaster that was basically swept under the carpet with all the other nasty stuff from the last twenty years or so. Let’s not have a repeat of this Lynas business nonsense and ‘pulling the wool over the public’s eyes’ in Pahang or elsewhere in Malaysia.

Let's not suffer the likes of Chernobyl or Bhopal catastrophes in our country.

"If there is a probability of a disaster occurring which comes with the introduction of an industry or commercial activity, it is not advisable to embark on it.

Is it not enough that Mitsubishi is still cleaning up the site 20 years after shutting down its plant in Bukit Merah? Isn't it lesson enough to deter starting another similar operation?

Money is not everything, even if it could bring in billions of ringgit, when it is known that years down the road, many lives would be affected and result in untold and unnecessary sufferings.

Try asking the ministers to work there in the first place. If they cannot take up the offer, just leave others alone. The people cannot be used as scapegoats, guinea pigs and slaves... "

The above comment is just so true - some politicians just want to be famous to undertake out-of the norm projects - especially in the light of Japan nuclear crisis, they still want to gamble on the environment and lives of the people?
